Although this is a great novel, Jack McDevitt has done better than this in the past. This book is nicely written, with an engaging, fast-moving plot...but it still pales in comparison to the author's other works. If you love McDevitt's books, then you'll like this. It wouldn't be a bad choice for your first McDevitt novel, even; it just wouldn't be the best one.
