It's always interesting to see what people in years past thought would occur by the present day. I can still remember some strange predictions for the year 2000, including one that said that, by Y2K, the letters C, X, and Z would be dropped from the English alphabet! Written in 1992, "The Calling"'s timeline spans from the late fifties to well into the aughts, and makes for interesting reading for the reason I just mentioned, as well as being a compelling story. Normally, it takes me more than one sitting to finish a long book, but I devoured this 319-page novel within about two to three hours. The plot is decidedly strange, and the ending is a bit of a shocker, but I found this one to be quite a winner. Unfortunately, copies of "The Calling" may be hard to come by; the novel was first published in 1992, and, though I'm a big fan of Christian fiction, I had never heard of David E. Lawrence prior to finding this novel at a local library sale. If you can find this at your local library, used bookstore, thrift store or yard/garage sale, be sure to pick it up.
